Multimedia communication is greatly dependent on good standards. The presence of standards allows for a larger volume of information exchange, there by benefiting the equipment manufacturers and service providers. It also benefits customers, as now they have a greater freedom to choose between manufacturers. All in all, standards are a prerequisite to multimedia communication. Standards for video coding are also required to be efficient for the compression of video content. This is because a large number of bits are required for the transmission of uncompressed video data. Various special algorithms, which take the characteristics of the video into account, can compress the video with high compression ratio. In this thesis we analyze the standardization efforts on video compression: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DIVX, XVID and 3GPP.en
