Fractional order calculus is a emerging area and is used in many real life applications. Fractional order calculus is used in control system to design controllers which perform in a superior manner than the conventional controller. Fractional order PID controller is used in most of the applications because it gives more flexibility than the conventional controller. This thesis implements conventional PID controller and fractional PID controller to control the speed of DC motor. It performs a comparative study of both the controllers. Fractional order controller has two main parameters λ and μ. To find out the optimal values of λ and μ, particle swarm optimization technique is used. It is observed that the fractional order PID controller gives superior performance in speed control of DC motor as compared to conventional PID controller.en
