The doctoral work was examine the ecological sustainability of chickpea-rice and sunflower-rice as alternative to conventional wheat-rice cultivation. The economics associated with the shifting of cultivation pattern was examined along with a detailed study on the microbial ecology of the soil during this shifting of pattern. Observations indicated reduction in water consumption, increase in soil biological activity and better performance of cellulose degraders in the proposed cropping pattern.en
