| dc.description.abstract | Bioceramics have proven to be attractive materials for repairing and replacing body parts due to their biocompatibility. In many applications, bioceramics are used in the form of bulk materials of a specific shape. However in load bearing applications due to their inherent brittleness they are used as a coating material on a tougher substrate. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a bioceramic that has a composition similar to that of bone. As well as improving biocompatibility, it encourages the ingrowth of bone and thus can be used as fixer such as total hip replacements and dental implants. The optimization of bioactive glasses requires a proper understanding of chemical, physical mechanical and biological properties, In the present report based on literature survey we have selected zinc and barium based boroaluminosilicate glass series. These glasses were dipped in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution for different time durations and then characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UVVisible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform-InfraRed Spectroscopy and solubility measurements to check their bioactivity. However, during soaking in SBF solution, these glasses show amorphous layer formation on the surface of the glasses. | en |
