Abstract
Safe water and hygienic sanitation facilities are the two basic essential amenities the
community needs for healthy living. Hence these two facilities are gaining importance in
the country specially for medium size towns, satellite communities and rural human
settlements. Though urban areas are being provided with sewerage systems and sewage
treatment plant for safe disposal municipal sewage, rural areas and satellite communities
still lack this basic need.
This thesis is an effort to design an appropriate sewerage scheme for a medium size
cantonment, keeping in view the typical requirements and problems related with scattered
areas, thin population density and lack of skilled manpower and resources. In this thesis
an attempt also has been made to provide an alternative to conventional sewer and
sewage treatment plant in the form of small bore system and constructed wetland system
respectively. Since scarcity of water for human use becoming a global problem specially
in developing countries like India, where resources are limited and being exploited
inefficiently apart from spurge in population, reuse of treated wastewater becomes a
preferred disposal method rather than discharging it to the inland water bodies. Keeping
this in view this work takes into consideration reuse of treated effluent for irrigation of
golf course and open green areas where water requirement is more and problem of
distribution of treated wastewater is less (being concentrated areas).
Deeply involved in the problems of sewage collection, treatment and disposal of a
cantonment area, where frequent clogging and unsatisfactory sewage treatment provides
a big challenge to any engineer, this work of thesis has been selected as an effort to
suggest a scheme and design which can overcome these problems and provide a
reasonably better solution to these challenges.
