Abstract

Effect of heavy metal on the enzyme activity of whole cells(free and encapulated biomaterial) was studied by spectrophotometry. Parameters such as pH, concentration of biomaterial, substrate, incubation time were optimized to get maximum activity of the biomaterial. It was observed that heavy metal ions like Hg(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II)and Co(II) inhibit activity of the enzyme. Maximum inhibition was obtained for Hg(II)ion in a workable pH range 8.5 to 10 and optimized biomaterial concentration was 0.5mg/mL. the spectrophotometric studies were conducted at 400nm
