Hydrothermal scheduling is an important aspect in power system operation. The main objective of the hydrothermal scheduling is to minimize the total operating cost while satisfying all the operational constraints. Over the years, many researchers have used several optimization techniques to solve hydrothermal scheduling problem in order to achieve a better result. In this dissertation, hybrid modified gravitational search and SQP algorithm has been proposed for solving short term hydrothermal scheduling problem. The proposed hybrid technique is the combination of the global search technique and the local search technique that works in two stages. The first stage employees global search technique MGSA to explore the search space and obtain a near to global solution. The second stage employees local search technique SQP for the exploitation of the of the explored search space to obtain the final solution. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid MGSA-SQP algorithm, it is applied on the two standard systems. The results have been compared with other well established results mentioned in the literature and found satisfactory.en
