Abstract

The state of a cutting tool is a crucial factor in the process of metal cutting as the increase in expenses in terms of scrapped components, machine tool fissures and unscheduled downtime result from worn tool usage. Monitoring the tool flank wear without affecting the throughput is considered as the prudent method in production technology. The objective of this thesis work is to analyse the variation in the noise generated during turning operation of EN24 steel on a CNC machine with the progression of tool wear. The turning operations are performed for different combination of parameters like cutting speed, feed and depth of cut and noise is recorded. The combination values of the three parameters are obtained using design of experiments. Effect of different parameters on noise is found using ANOVA. Optimal parameters are found for lowest sound level. At optimal parameters condition 1/1 frequency spectrum analysis is done and shift of peak frequency from 500 Hz to 1000 Hz is found. It is concluded that the sound level has direct correlation with tool wear.Sound level increases with increase in tool wear as expected.
