Abstract: The Optimal Power Flow (OPF) is very popular in power system analysis and it carried out to obtain the optimal settings of control parameters. Further, the security of the optimal schedule shall be investigated under network contingencies. In this dissertation, the Security Constrained Optimal Power Flow (SCOPF) is formulated to analyze the performance during healthy conditions and in contingency, which involves loss of a network segment such as transformer or transmission line etc. The formulation is extended to include the effect of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC). The performance has been analyzed for base case and the contingency case of single line outage. The OPF is solved by Newton’s method and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO).The base case is solved by both the methods. The contingency state solution under TCSC is solved by PSO. Due to the inclusion of TCSC in the system, line flows are brought within limits and system’s security is restored. The analysis is carried out on standard IEEE test systems and the results are compared.
