Abstract: The requirement of reliable and energy is increasing day by day. There is a need to set-up new infrastructure like more generating stations, install new transmission lines and utility to meet the demand. But installing of these is very time consuming and costly. Also more policies are build up for the liberalization of the electricity market as more companies are emerging to enter the market. In addition technical advancement in small-scale generation units popularly known as distributed generation enhances its role in today’s market. The usage of DG helps to decrease the losses and improves the voltage profile. It also provide grid reinforcement and more reliable supply to the consumer. To optimize the losses the size of DG must be strategically placed. Various methods are presented to optimize the size of DG at a location. In this thesis work, loss sensitivity factor to select the location and bacterial foraging optimization technique is to obtain the optimal size to minimize the losses. The given method is tested on 69-node in RDN.
