Abstract: There are many aspects to security ranging from secure commerce and payments to private communications and protecting passwords. One essential aspect for secure communications is that of secret key Cryptography. It is the automated method in which security goals are accomplished. It includes the process of encryption that converts plain-text into cipher-text. The process of decryption reconverts the cipher-text into plain-text. Secure communication is the prime requirement of every organization. To achieve this, one can use many techniques or algorithms available for Cryptography. Various models were developed for the encryption in which keys were generated from the available data. Data Encryption Standard (DES) is the most commonly used algorithm for security purpose that was announced by National Bureau of Standard. It is the strongest algorithm but due to large processing time, it can be easily broken by the eavesdroppers. Twofish algorithm is nowadays a strongest algorithm due to its large key stream. An efficient encryption algorithm should consist of two factors – fast response and reduced complexity. Cryptosystems must satisfy three general requirements 1) the enciphering and deciphering transformations must be efficient for all keys. 2) System must be easy to use. 3) Security of the system should depend only on the secrecy of the keys and not on the secrecy of the algorithms. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the various aspects of DES and Twofish algorithms.
